Made in Maui County Festival
So, what’cha doing this weekend? If you’ve got yard work, fixing that leaky kitchen faucet or washing the Family Truckster on the to-do, put it aside, ‘cause this Friday and Saturday is the 2nd Annual Made in Maui County Festival.
Nearly 150 vendors will be showing and selling their products — foods, produce, art, crafts, jewelry, fashions, gifts, and collectibles — all made here in Maui County, and we’ll be back again in booth 147! This year, we’re using the show as a launching point, introducing several new products and lots of new images, including a new Po Haku (Starry Night) series.
The Buyer’s and Shopper’s Preview is Friday the 6th, from 2PM until 6 PM, and the Festival runs Saturday the 7th, from 8 AM until 4:30 PM at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center. Tickets are $35.00 for the preview and $5.00 on Saturday, kids 12 and under are free. Visit our booth and tell us our workshop mantra (f/16 and be there), and get a special limited print.
We’ll see ya there!
New Images Released
I just unveiled a whopping 227 NEW photos that you can purchase from our Galleries. Looking at this new body of work, you’ll find a bit of divergence from my “norm,” as I explore new paths in my journey through photography: While you’ll still find new moody sunsets and a continuation of my “Light and Motion®” themes, I’ve also been experimenting with more twilight scenes, starry night images and painting with light. There’s a new gallery that’s dedicated to Hawaiian Lei, a host of new flora and native Hawaiian birds.
I challenged myself to stretch my comfort zone, and venture to a new realm of water photography: Honoa Wai® – a new series of images that gives you the feeling of being in the water, or at the edge of the ocean’s strike zone — bringing Hawaii’s coral reefs and waves into your home or office, while remaining comfortably dry.
The Big Breach: Our Largest Print Ever Produced
At our last Day with the Whales workshop, I managed to capture a juvenile Pacific Humpback whale performing a full breach, captured in 17 frames. I’ve now turned this series of images into ONE amazing print, and it’s not for the faint of heart: Measuring in at 17-inches wide by a whopping 35-feet long, it’s the largest photographic print we’ve ever made, and it’s now available to you!
We’re making two versions of “The Big Breach,” and both are in uber-limited-editions of only five (5) pieces. The first version is printed on Hahnemühle’s Fine Art Pearl paper on our Canon iPF8400 printer and coated with Hahnemühle’s protective lacquer. The second version gets our high-tech Alumination, dye-infused aluminum treatment, and comes as seven (7), ready-to-hang aluminum panels. Order yours on our Big Breach page.
Murder, She Wrote Feature
Calling all book worms: We’ve been featured in Jessica Fletcher and Donald Bain’s latest “Murder, She Wrote” mystery, Aloha Betrayed. True to form, the book is a great read, with plenty of twists and turns, and fantastic research. Those who have ever been to Maui will feel like they’re in the thick of the mystery. Be sure to check out page 130, but to do that you’ve got to get a copy!
It’s available through Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/Murder-She-Wrote-Aloha-Betrayed/dp/0451466543/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1402084689&sr=8-2&keywords=aloha+betrayed) or Barnes and Nobel (http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/murder-she-wrote-jessica-fletcher/1115811954?ean=9780451466549).
Grab a copy, and get your chicken skin on!
Cover Me Handi
Handi Guides (the only Maui guide book that caters to individuals with physical limitations) chose my Pacific Humpback Whale image, “Who Are You?” for their Winter/Summer cover.
I’m one of the few photographers on the Island that offer customized photo workshops for people with physical limitations, including those with partial sight and limited mobility. I’m very honored that my work has been chosen to represent this great and resourceful publication.

On Maui! Magazine: Maui Open Studios
Imagine my surprise when the latest edition of On Maui! Arrived in my mailbox, and I find my mug on page 11! Back in February, we opened our doors to the public for the first time, and had a wonderful weekend meeting some great people and demonstrating the art of producing art.
The attendance was exceptional and the attendees seemed to thoroughly enjoy their time.
People came to view our latest works, captured on Maui, Hawai’i, Molokai, Oahu and Kauai. During their visit we showcased many images on aluminum, canvas giclees, metallic and sugar cane prints, plus, we introduced an awesome new photographic medium.
Maui Open Studios
For the first time, this February 8th and 9th, I’ll be opening my home studio to the general public as a part of the 2014 Maui Open Studio’s event. I’ll be transforming the space into a gallery for the weekend, plus introducing a new line of images and giving live shooting demonstrations. Come on out for some great imagery, incredible deals, and talk story time. We’ll be open from 11 AM to 6 PM: 300 Hokulani Street in Pukalani. Visit mauiopenstudios.com for more information and a downloadable map.
Here’s an excerpt from the Maui Open Studios website:
This entire event is free to the public! Whether you are a Maui resident or a visitor, you will be treated to 4 great weekends of inspiration and art and have the opportunity to purchase artwork directly from the artists themselves and perhaps even mold some clay with your own hands.

Featured Artist Profile with Arts Business Institute
I recently did an interview with Carolyn Edlund, the Executive Director of the Arts Business Institute, which serves a crucial, common need in the art- and craft-making communities – practical business education for creative entrepreneurs.
I presented a hands-on workshop with the Institute at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, teaching artists how to properly light and photograph their work for publications, catalogs and the Web.

Alumination ® – Taking Photographic Prints to a New Level
Back in what I call one of my “previous lives,” I worked with aluminium on a daily basis in the aerospace industry. Aluminium is awesome: it virtually lasts forever, it’s strong and light and it’s recyclable. In fact, there are aluminium instrument panels I made that are still in Space Shuttles.
Now, I’m proud to be working with the material again, producing fine-art aluminium prints. So, if you’ve ever wanted a piece of art that would virtually last forever, is easy to clean and had more moods than mood ring, welcome to the world printed on aluminium!
Each of our aluminium pieces begins by printing the image with special dyes, in reverse, on a piece of high-temp transfer paper. The paper is then placed upon a sheet of coated aluminium and placed into a 400 degree heat press. After about 90 seconds, the ink turns into a gas, which permeates the aluminium, becoming a part of the substrate.
The result is a print that will last generations, is cleaned with household glass cleaner and has an incredible depth and range of personality that changes with the ambient light in the room.
Each piece is part of a limited-edition series, which I personally sign and number. Every one is ready to hang, right out of the box, to be enjoyed for generations.

Paintography ®
Paintography ®. That’s what you get when you mix insomnia with Kona coffee! Utilizing three different software programs, I start with one of my original images and digitally “paint” over it with an electronic brush. The result is a new type of art medium with the fluidity and softness of an oil painting, but with the detail and luminosity of a photograph. Each Paintograph takes days to complete and immense computing power to boot! These limited -edition Paintography canvases are available in 8X10 (100 piece edition), 16X20 (50 piece edition) and 20X30 (20 piece edition) sizes.
